Get tanned - stay safe!

Hiya everyone!

I am on holiday in the beautiful Greek island of Serifos, in the Cyclades. With a background of white houses on dark hills, I have been enjoying swimming into turquoise waters and getting a tan so much that I made a video to share with you all my tanning tips and tricks for a safe, even and golden tan.  This blog post gives you more details of how to achieve the best tan.
Years of experience, under the smouldering Greek sun!!!

Now, when I go to the beach, I always try to protect my skin from the bad boy called Sun, but also my hair from the roughness of the sea water.  So the first steps are always taken when I’m still at home.
Just before I put my bathing suit on at home, I will take a shower, wet my hair and put a leave-in conditioner on my hair, so that it is protected and remains smooth and silky, even after swimming in the sea and not washing it for a few hours.  This year, I have been using the Aussie Miracle Colour Insurance leave-in conditioner, which I spray on to wet hair and then comb with a thick comb.  This will stay on my hair until I immerse into the deep blue sea and will protect my hair against the saltiness of the sea. Hair: check!

The next step is to apply my sun screen. (You will need to apply the sun screen at least half an hour before you expose your skin to the sun).   I have an olive skin, which tans very easily, but I also burn if I’m not careful, so for the first 5-6 days at least, I will always put a high SPF product – 25-30 for my body and 30 for my face.  This summer I am using Boots Soltan Once Invisible 8hr Sun Protection (SPF 25) in a lovely spray-gel for my body and for the face Soltan Face Moisturising Suncare Cream (SPF 30), which were BOGOF so that was a fabulous bargain!  And I have been using them all these days, so I have been very satisfied, as I have acquired an even tan, and have not been burnt at all. Loving the Boots brand, as always J

When I reach the beach, carelessness takes over and I completely let myself loose into the sea and the waves. I love the sea and I love swimming, I can’t imagine a holiday without these two elements.
So I will plunge into the sea for at least 30-45 minutes and enjoy my swim.  Now, you might not realise that, but the strength of the sun is doubled when you’re in the sea, that is why it’s crucial you keep your head wet all the time and keep moving in the water so your face, neck and shoulders don’t burn.

Everything needs moisture when you come out of the sea: your face, your body, your hair.  So it was a good thing I carried with me Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Moisture Mist hydrating gel, from July’s Glossybox.  This little bottle is pure magic. It moisturises the skin and the hair and smells amazing! It was a great hit with me and my sister at the beach this summer!!
An absolute must in my beach bag has always been Evian Facial Spray (Brumisateur).  I spray it on my face and neck to take away the salt water and then I tap gently with a small towel to feel refreshed and salt-free!  I can’t survive the beach without it!

Of course, I will always renew my sun screen on my body and face when I come out of the sea, at least the first time.  Especially on the shoulders, mine are the first parts of my body to burn, and also on my face – I will put sun screen one more time and then I will definitely go into the sea, at least one more time after 15-20 minutes of sun bathing.

By going in and out of the sea, the tanning process is sped up, without you noticing it and while staying safe.  Don’t forget to switch sides every time, so lie on your back for 15 mins, go back to the sea then lie on your front and so on, for an even tan.
You can also get an even tan, by playing sports at the beach, like racket ball or beach volley.  Not me though, I am lazy and clumsy at sports, so I’d rather read a book or listen to music while lounging on a chaise-long.

Finally, after having used the high SPF sun screen for the first 5-6 days (or a week, depending on how easily you tan and how sensitive your skin is) I will move to a tanning oil, like Hawaiian Tropic or Carrotene, with SPF 10, which will deepen the tan and give a bronzy colour, while keeping you protected.
My advice to stay safe while sunbathing: always go to the beach in the morning (I know, we’re on holiday so we might stay out late and wake up late hehe, but if you can just go), or in the afternoon at around 4 pm and until 6 pm, when the sun’s beams are not so harmful.  You will also enjoy it more.

More importantly, wear a hat, stay under an umbrella if you feel too hot, drink lots of water while there and don’t face the sun for too long – 10 minutes max with a good sun screen every day will give you a healthy glow.

To keep my tan for many days and weeks to follow, even if I don’t go to the beach any more, I always exfoliate when I shower and ALWAYS apply a body lotion after the shower.  It doesn’t have to be a special “after sun” lotion – all these body milks are the same in my opinion. As long as you keep your skin moisturised and don’t let it peel,  your tan will last for many weeks!

TOWIE biyatches, eat your heart out!

Is this the perfect bag?

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Rena and I went to Spitalfields Market. Although I have been living in London for 13 years, I've never been there...and my jaw dropped!
It is a huge indoors market, with fabulous shops and with hundreds of stalls with very, very desireable things!
We spent time looking around, finding exquisite clothing items, unique jewellery and fabulous accessories.  All in very good prices, since Sundays are the New Designers day.
At some point, we passed a stall with hundreds of bags; small, large, clutches, totes, wallets...you name it!
And there it was: the bag I was looking for! The bag I couldn't find in any shops I've been looking for the past 3 months.

I have a black tote for winter to carry with me at work, and that can take all my necessities for the day, most importantly, my huge make up bag! I was looking for a similar one for the summer, with a nice summery colour. And there it was.

The bag was right, the price was right, so you can imagine my excitement when I bought it.
One of my best buys ever!  I took it to work the next day, to hear the (expected) oohs and aaahs by my colleagues and since then, it has become an indispensible part of my day.
Here is a video, where I show it off!

June favourites

The prodigal daughter returns....
I'm sorry I didn't post for so long, it has been MAD and I know I promised I'll post links for the May favourites, but here's the thing:
Having to find the links for all the products, was quite time consuming and I had to open so many different tabs, go back and forth, look around for the best link etc. and so it was putting me off a little. Lazy! I know. However, instead of being fun and loving it, making a video and having to search for the links was becoming a chore. Therefore I decided just to post the names of the products - only post some links if there is a deal or for something special - and thank God for Google (and other search engines) you can always write the name of the product and you will be guided to the relevant website, wherever in the world you are. After all, I was only posting links for the UK, so why limit it into one country?
Who knows, maybe in the future, if my subscribers and my readers increase and there would be a demand for links, I will go back to posting them again....

So here are my June favourites:

- Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E Natural Bronze Body Lotion - Gradual Tanning Moisturizer
- L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Self Tanning Dry Mist For Face (Light Tan)
- BM Beauty Mineral Bronzer in Summer Warmth (from this month's Glossybox)
- Korres Botanically Coated Blush in number 15 Natural
- Sleek Blusher in number 933 Coral

- Garnier Youthful Radiance Caffeine Anti-Dark Circles 2 in 1 Tinted Eye Roll-On
- Too Faced Natural Eye Eyeshadow Palette
- MAC Fluidline Gel Liner in Blacktrack (long wearing and smudge proof!)
- Accessorize Aztec Illusion Nail Polish

I really love my makeup on this video, which I did with my Too Faced Natural Eye palette - this has become my favourite combination for summer!!!

My lovely Mistress!!!!!

As you may have read in an older blogpost I was taking about the beautiful coral nail polish that I fell in love with, by watching this video by SWalkerMakeUp (love her!) back at the end of January.
Every month I would say "Next month I'm buying the Ciaté Mistress" and every month I failed to do so :(
Call it different priorities, forgetfulness, too much analysing things, being bored to wait for the package to come in the post (you can only order it online), not finding anything else to buy from the website (I was ashamed to order just one product) and so many other things that prevented me buying it... Silly me!
To motivate me, I even put it on my BlackBerry as a wallpaper (we are either obsessed with make up, or we're not! LOL)

It took me nearly four months until finally, May comes and I make the big decision to place the order for Ciaté Mistress and an Urban Decay 24/7 liquid eyeliner and then....just wait.
It took BeautyBay a WHOLE WEEK to deliver the package. A whole week!!! I started to worry a bit...But when they did, the satisfaction and surprise paid off!
First of all the packaging was incredible! I have never seen anything packaged so carefully. With tons of bubble wrap and each product carefully wrapped individually in green polysterene sheets, it's a pity I didn't take a picture of it to show you what great care this company took for the safety of my purchases!

The UB eyeliner is quite good - although I do prefer my Avon SuperShock eyeliner (wait for May favourites!)
But the Ciaté Mistress Paint Pot is the BEST!!! First of all, the bottle is the most beautiful bottle, with the Ciaté characteristic black bow on it. It's just a gem to have on your dressing table.
The colour is simply amazing and no photo can do it justice of how it really looks on the nails. A bright, red, shiny, gorgeous coral with hints of pink or a bit of orange, depending on the light.  Just incredible! I got lots of "Oohs!" and "Aahs!" when I appeared at work with my new nails (I followed Sara's instructions and glued on my Boots nails).

http://instagr.am/p/KzrTSFyCCK/ - feel free to follow me :) on Instagram: mariettaz

By far this should be my most favourite nail polish of all time.
By the way, you can see my nails "in action" in my April favourites video (previous post and here)

I have lots of beautiful accessories to compliment my nails as you can see in the photo. New Look were having a BOGOF (Buy One Get One Free) deal on their very hip jewellery a few weeks ago and I got me a bracelet and some cute earrings. Bliss!
I had finally fed my coral obsession!!!!

A couple of days ago, after wearing them for over two weeks I decided it was time to say goodbye for now and took off the nails. I will paint them again with my Mistress very soon, and even paint my toenails with it (I have spotted in New Look the perfect wedges to go with it!!!).

I absolutely adore it and I have to thank Ciaté, Sara and BeautyBay for making me feel so fabulous!
Ciaté Mistress Paint Pot is sold at £8.50 on BeautyBay. Grab one yourself!

PS.: I just found out from Ciaté's Facebook page that they are also in Selfridges! Urgh!!! If only I knew!

April 2012 Favourites....about time!

I apologise for the lack of videos and blog posts during the last month. It was a very busy month, what with my nephew coming over, me working long hours and so many other things that prevented me to dedicate time to my favourite hobby.
But the one thing that prevented me and ruined my mood completely, was the weather! Completely uninspiring, moody, dark, rainy and absolutely freezing. It's been like that for the last six weeks, just awful. Eversince I filmed my March faves, the weather changed completely - not a Spring weather at all. So it ruined my mood to film anything and also by being so busy, I didn't write on my blog either.

But that's going to change! You'll see more blog posts and more regular videos by me!!! I'm excited as I have a few things up my sleeve ;)

Anyway, here are my April favourites:

And here's the video:

March 2012 favourites video and links

Well hello there...!
I should write more often on my blog, I know...not only when I upload a video. Ok, that's a promise.
I apologise for delaying this video. It should have been ready on Friday the 30th, but I was busy and after a long and well-deserved rest, I filmed it on Sunday. But when I tried to upload it on YouTube it was rejected as it was too big. I didn't remember that it had to be up to 15 minutes and it was 17 minutes long, quite big, but the original was 38 minutes long so even when I edited a lot out, it was still huge!!!!
But I got a few ideas on how to do it again and to make it short and snappy, so I filmed it again today!

I not only talk about the beauty products that I loved using during March, but also my favourite TV programme, which I'm sure it's the favourite of a lot of people, including Mr President himself, Barack Obama.... I'm not telling you which one, you'll have to watch the video 'till the end to see!!

My cleansing routine video

Hi All,

I always wanted to try the Cleanse and Polish cleanser by Liz Earle, but as I had a No 7 £5 voucher which was going to expire soon, I went to Boots and I discovered that No 7 had just released their own Hot Cloth Cleanser, http://www.boots.com/en/No7-Beautiful-Skin-Hot-Cloth-Cleanser_1245026/, for £10 and with my voucher £5! Yaaay!! It is actually very good, it removes the makeup completely and leaves the skin smooth and refreshed.
On the video I am also using:
- Botanics Skin Brightening Toner http://www.boots.com/en/Botanics-Skin-Brightening-Toner-250ml_34095/ - and mention Botanics Brightening Skin Cleanser http://www.boots.com/en/Botanics-skin-Brightening-Cleanser-New-Improved_50728/
- Boots Essentials Cucumber Eye Makeup Remover Gel http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Essentials-Cucumber-Eye-Make-Up-Remover-Gel-150ml_869638/
All of the above from Boots http://www.boots.com/
Finally, I am finishing with Bepanthol Nourishing & Reconstructive Face Cream. My mummy left that cream from the last time she was here. It is a rich, thick moisturising cream that replenishes and nourishes the skin, and the smell reminds me so much of my mummy!
I have found that it is sold mainly in greek pharmacy sites.

Glossybox video review - March 2012, The Harrods Edition!!!

You subscribe for one Glossybox per month and two come in one week!!!

This video is my take on this month's Glossybox, which was made in collaboration with Harrods.
Watch me opening the box in front of the camera and my reactions for every product, especially when I discovered that I have received a specific product that lots of people didn't, hehehe.
Afterwards I review each product, this was filmed on the next day.  There has been so much hype for this particular box in cyberland, eversince Glossybox announced the collaboration with Harrods. Here, I send a little message to those who had negative things to say. My opinion, you're free to comment :)

Favourite Tools & Accessories and a mini haul Video

I just received from Amazon a tripod for my iPod (and it rhymes!)
So now, I can make videos with ease, as before I had to mount my camera on my tripod and attach my iPod with...rubber bands on the camera! (previous video of Feb favourites was filmed like this).
So today, I woke up early, made my coffee and put my iPod on my tripod - hahahaha, it cracks me up everytime I write it - and filmed a video about my favourite tools and accessories. I also thought of including a couple of things I bought for my room, like a mini haul.

I also decided (don't ask me why) to curl my hair with my Babyliss Curling Wand, which was sitting on my dresser for a while... I like the ease of use, but I think my hair needs a strong styling mousse to keep the curls, well...curly, and bouncy.
Here is the video:

My first Glossybox! February 2012: London Fashion Week edition

Is it Christmas time? No! It's GLOSSYBOX time!!!
After a lot of deliberation, me being sceptic and stingy and analytical (and anal) I finally succumbed to the temptation and subscribed to Glossybox: a fabulous internet company that sends you luxury samples of high-end cosmetic brands for £10 a month (plus £2.95 p+p). My first box, the February, London Fashion Week edition, just arrived yesterday, but, as always, I was at work (insert outraged emoticon here).
So this morning, I couldn't wait and with just a smudge of lipstick and hair tied in a messy bun (the horror!!) I flew literally to the Post Office to collect it.
I came home also with wings in my back, opened it and OMG!!! It's like these guys have been living with me or read my blogposts in here!!!!

First of all when you subscribe they ask you to fill your beauty profile. I don't remember mentioning anywhere that I love PURPLE so much! The packaging is divine and the colours are exactly the colours I currently am obsessed with: purple, gold, pink and silvery-grey.

With too much excitement in my hands, that I dropped the box on the floor twice (classic Marietta!) I unravelled the pretty pink bow and Voilá! My first products to indulge and cherish were in front of my eyes!!

The brands are all luxury, rare brands.  I was so pleasantly surprised!!! A lavender hand sanitiser, which smells amazing, in gorgeous lavender purple,by Doctor Bronner's Magic. Only the word Magic was enough for me! Perfect for my handbag, to replace the boring, unscented pharmaceutical sanitiser that I've been carrying. And it does smell divine.

The next thing, for which a little yelp came out of my mouth was the Como Shamballa Invigorate Shower Gel with Eucaliptus, Geranium, Lavender and Pepermint essential Oils. I have been hearing the YT beauty gurus raving about this brand and I had the urge to try its products for so long. The shower gel smells like you are inside a fragrant steam room in the most luxurious spa....! I absolutely adore this feeling!!

A bigger scream came with the next product:
The Awapuhi Wild Ginger styling treatment oil by Paul Mitchell . I've been wanting to get Paul Mitchell products for my hair, plus a good treatment oil for a very long time. So I got both said desires fulfilled in this amazing little bottle. I have tried it on my hair and you only need to put a couple of pumps on your hand, as it's quite rich and then massage it on the ends of your hair (NEVER on the roots) for a shiny result!

I then looked at the little box from Becca, yet another brand that I wanted to try, after listening to the youtubers: the Beach-Tint in Watermelon. Suffice to say, I put it on my lips and I have been transported back to Greece, in the summer, eating watermelons in the afternoon. This will be great for my holidays, for a bit of cheek and lip colour on the beach! Can't wait!!!

Finally, and this is where the big Aaaaaaah! comes, a fantastic, amazing, stupendous, brilliant Pure Mineral eye shadow from BM Beauty in, yes, you guessed it, PURPLE!!! So I swatched it on my hand, only to discover this is the colour I WAS LOOKING FOR! I was in Superdrug just yesterday looking at Barry M's Dazzle Dusts, mumbling to myself  "I haven't got a purple one". But something stopped me from buying it, call it instinct or pure luck as my train was leaving and I was in a hurry and boy, didn't that hesitation pay off!! The one I got in my Glossybox is the same size as the Barry M one and the colour is even prettier! So happy!

And that's it for the February box! I will surely enjoy using these products and I can't wait for the March edition, which will be the Harrods edition, posted on the 9th of March, according to the website.
If you want, you still have time to subscribe, because I believe from all the hype for the Harrods box is going to sell out, So hurry if you don't want to miss it. Better yet, message me your email address, so I can send you a link to subscribe and I will get Glossydots, which means a free box for moi!

Stay glossy!

My 10 Beauty Commandments

As I get older (and wiser) I keep finding ways to make my skin feel and look healthier.
Over the years, I've discovered ways, so easy to follow and so enjoyable that I can honestly say, I owe my healthy skin to 10 simple rules.
Here they are:
  1. Avoid the sun - If you want to get a tan during the summer, never put your face in direct sunlight. Use sunscreen, wear a hat and keep your neck up in the shade. The sun will find your face anyway and give it a healthy tan, instead of burnt flesh that will get wrinkles and premature ageing.
  2. Cleanse your skin every night - Take all the make up off, concentrate on the eye area. Use a gentle cleanser that will benefit your skin, according to your skin type. Avoid toners high in alcohol. Prefer natural ingredients, such as cucumber, aloe vera, coconut and almond oil.
  3. M-O-I-S-T-U-R-I-Z-E!!! Cannot stress this enough. If you don't wear any other creams, (like me) wear a moisturizer, preferably with SPF 15-20 (I have been advised by a cosmetologist that there is no SPF higher than 25, so don't believe everything you see) and give your skin a refresher before you put make up on (tinted moisturizers are great!) and at night. Your skin needs moisture badly!
  4. If you're younger than 30 you don't need any anti-wrinkle creams!!! Your skin is too young for heavy chemicals. Think of it as creating anti-bodies in the future: if you wear an anti-wrinkle cream from a young age, when you get a wrinkle in your 40's, it will not react to any cream - the skin will be used to them. So just cleanse thoroughly and wear your moisturizer religiously.
  5. Don't put any heavy make up from a young age. I had a friend at school, who was wearing make up since she was 12. She now looks like she's my grandmother!!! I started wearing make up in my 20's and I never had zits, spots, blackheads, NADA!
  6. Drink LOTS of water and fruit juices. Moisture needs to come from in and out.
  7. Exfoliate once a week.  I love exfoliating masks!!! Especially the peel-off ones, they remind me of 60's movies, Doris Day, my mom who used to pretend she was a ghost scaring the shit out of us, and I love peeling them off! Mrs Doubtfire, you rock!
  8. Treat yourself to a home-made spa! On my day off when I'm at home, the contact lenses come off, there isn't a trace of make up on my skin and I treat my self to a spa bath, with Eucalyptus essential oil, hair mask, exfoliating mask and my head on a bath pillow. I close my eyes and relax for 10 minutes and I feel like a new person. Music, candles and phone off the hook help as well. After doing me, I clean my make up brushes: I use my E.L.F. Brush Cleaner which smells wonderful, a cleansing wipe and baby shampoo to wash them thoroughly, I put them in Brush Guards and in a glass by the window, to catch the sunlight and dry upside down. Depending on the quality of the brush, they get as good as new.
 9. Spend a day with no make up! Crazy heh? I know. But the skin needs breathing and with just a pinch on your cheeks and a bit of lip gloss you will feel refreshed and beautiful.
10. Most of all, HAVE FUN! Learn your face, its secrets, its pros and cons, experiment, learn things, get advice, enjoy your beauty, gorgeous!!!
